Living with Javelina in the Neighborhood
Collared Peccaries or Javelinas (Pecari tajacu)
Javelinas, although pig-like, are not true pigs and instead are members of their own, unique family, Tayassuidae. Javelinas posses a scent gland on their lower back which releases a strong, skunk-like smell if they are alarmed. Javelinas can be quite aggressive and will use their large canine teeth to defend themselves.
The on-going steps the Village Two Association has taken are supported by AZ Department of Game and Fish.   They will be documenting the occurrences of reported javelina incidents throughout the Villages.  It is imperative homeowners contact Game and Fish when/if they encounter javelina and feel threatened because the department will act to exterminate only when/if they determine that the javelina are a threat.  Game and Fish can only monitor the incidents that are reported.

Below are some additional notes recommended by Arizona Department of Game and Fish:
        1.    Never feed the animals. Secure any pet food within home.
        2.    Secure garbage bags and place within dumpsters, never on the ground. Do not keep        birdseed on patios or ground.
        3.    If javelina are spotted, make loud noises to discourage the animals.
       4.    Diluted ammonia spray from a water pistol, pepper spray and an extended wasp-killer    spray are good deterrents. They can be easily carried when walking a dog or simply walking the property.
         5.     Immediately report any threatening incident that may occur to AZ Game and Fish
623-236-7201 24 hours a day/7 days a week.  The end result from several conversations with Game and Fish is to “haze” the animals and create an aversive environment. Trapping has not proven to be the most effective method.  If the animals  “learn” that Village Two is unwelcoming and aversive, the animals will seek out a friendlier environment.
